20 years of the Alpine Town of Sonthofen: a sustainable anniversary
In 2005, Sonthofen was named Alpine Town of the Year for its outstanding commitment to sustainable urban development – a title that still has an impact today. To mark the anniversary year, a festive ceremony was held at the AlpenStadtMuseum in mid-April.
Former and new supporters of the Alpine Town idea came together to talk about their joint successes – including ecological showcase projects such as the wood chip cogeneration plant, the car-free city centre and the adventure trail on the Kalvarienberg. Particularly pleasing was the fact that students from Sonthofen highschool and representatives of the Youth Parliament of the Alpine Convention (YPAC) also joined in the celebrations and discussed ideas to shape their town.
Managing Director Magdalena Holzer personally conveyed the association’s congratulations – and had a fitting gift in her luggage: a wild bee hotel. It is intended as a sign that Sonthofen will remain a lively and liveable place for people and nature in the future. A town that blossoms and thrives and offers space – for good ideas, for meaningful encounters, for life in all its facets.
We are delighted with Sonthofen’s ongoing commitment to the Alpine Towns network and would especially like to thank Ingrid Fischer, second mayor and president of the association, for her many years of dedicated work at an international level.
The anniversary year has even more events in store – including a new edition of the Alpine Town Adventure Trail and a fair breakfast on the Strausbergalpe. Congratulations on the 20th anniversary!
